Prismatic Preferences
A Chromatic Symphony of Emotion and Abstraction
In Prismatic Preferences, Francesca Amalia Grimaldi moves beyond the dominion of blue to embrace a broader, warmer spectrum sunshine yellows, verdant greens, and subtle earth tones. Over four years of experimentation, this body of work reflects her evolving dialogue with color, rhythm, and atmosphere. Here, abstraction becomes a vessel of spiritual reverie, driven not by strict composition but by the emotional resonance of hues. Grimaldi begins with surrender. Immersing herself in landscapes of sensation imagined topographies, sun-drenched fields, or quiet storms she responds with intuitive, precise gestures. Her brushwork channels rain, wind, and light, transforming minimal forms into visceral, poetic expressions. Black tensile lines pierce soft washes; yellows and greens pulse like sudden summer rain, while silver glides like whispered breath.
Each painting is a study in contrasts wet and dry, thick and thin, light and weight. Her palette choices reveal a mathematician’s balance, yet her strokes remain emotionally spontaneous. The work echoes the structural clarity of Western Abstraction while retaining a deeply personal sensibility.
Recurring across the series is a tension between stillness and movement. Symphony in Black/Red pulses with gravity; Symphony in Blue/Yellow dissolves into lyrical dispersals. These paintings do not depict, they summon. Layers accumulate like sediment, murmuring of solitude, storms, and time.
Influences such as Zao Wou-Ki and Rothko flicker at the edges, but her vision remains singular, a synesthetic fusion of memory, scent, music, and movement. In this series, color is not seen-it’s felt.
