About The Artist

Francesca Amalia Grimaldi is an Italian contemporary artist whose creative journey has evolved from figurative landscapes to evocative works of abstract expressionism. Born on an island surrounded by the sea and raised in a family of musicians and artists, she developed a profound sensitivity to both classical music and visual form two elements that continue to shape and inspire her artistic practice.
Francesca’s academic path began with Classical Studies and Geological Sciences, but her passion for art led her to formal training at the Accademia Riaci in Florence, where she specialized in perspective drawing, painting techniques, and jewelry design. She later refined her skills in oil pastels during further studies in Pont-Aven, France.
Her early paintings captured the atmospheric beauty of Sardinia, Sicily, and the broader Mediterranean landscape. Over time, her focus shifted inward: her current mixed media abstractions combining acrylics, collage, and oil pastels explore themes of solitude, transformation, and internal landscapes.
For the artist, the encounter with abstraction following the early years of figurative exploration marks a pivotal turning point. Her painting becomes increasingly gestural, as figuration yields to the unfurling of bold, sun-drenched colors across large surfaces. Undulating or whirling forms emerge, articulated through a visual language in which pools of pigment are allowed to expand and overlap freely upon the canvas. At times, this chromatic flow is instead channeled into geometrically fluid shapes, guiding the gaze toward a representation that is ever more imaginary and intellectual. Her creative process is often accompanied by the classic music of Rachmaninov, Debussy, Mozart and Jazz music which continues to inform the emotional depth of her work.Francesca made her solo debut in 1987 at the Atrium Gallery in Pordenone, and since then, she has presented her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Her pieces have entered prestigious private and public collections internationally. Now based in India, she continues to expand her artistic language, blending European sensibilities with the cultural rhythms of her adopted home transforming introspection into visual poetry.
